The “Baker Cup” was started the summer of 1998. It is in remembrance of Elliot Baker who was an avid race fan and driver here at the Greenbush Race Park.
Elliot Baker was born on October 6, 1967 to Robert (Bobby) and Lannette Baker. Elliot grew up in St. Hilaire, MN graduating from Lincoln High School in 1987.
Elliot took over “Baker’s Acres” after his father passed away in 1986, later changing the name to “Baker’s Auto Salvage and Sales”. Elliot was a big NASCAR fan, his favorite driver being Jeff Gordon and his #24 car, thus the number for Elliot’s race car. Elliot enjoyed anything to do with racing, whether it was racing his race car, three wheelers, or demolition derbies. He was a sponsor for many area sporting teams, men’s and women’s softball, volleyball, racing, demo cars and snow mobiles.
Elliot started racing in the Street Class here a Greenbush Race Park back in mid 1993. Some other familiar names he ran against were Bryon Berger, Jared Foss, Julie Osowski, Shannon Gust and Ben Reese, just to name a few. In 1995 he moved up to the Wissota Modified class. Familiar names in that class back then were Terry Wahl, Tracy Kofstad, Dale Holtan, Lynn Lucken, and Davey Riopelle. You could be sure that if Elliot was racing that night, he was going to put on a show!
Elliot died from a brain aneurism on February 25, 1998 at the young age of 30.
